I’ve been passionate about flamenco guitar for more than two decades, ever since I first heard this amazing instrument for the first time in a concert in the Netherlands at the age of 14.
However, I soon found out that it’s quite difficult to learn this art through books or videos and probably even more so to find a good qualified teacher.
First flamenco course was a video
At the age of sixteen I found myself in a specialized flamenco store in Amsterdam watching a didactic video course of Paco Serrano. Blown away by his playing I was more motivated than ever to realize my dream to learn to play the flamenco guitar.
Fisrt flamenco experience in Granada
After finishing high school I worked for half a year saving money so that I could travel to Granada to find a teacher that could help me realize his goal.
Once in Spain, I met various amazing guitar players, but unfortunately they were not so amazing when it came to teaching.
Somewhat disappointed, after nine months I went back to the Netherlands to study business administration.
Conservatory in Barcelona
However, the desire to understand and play the flamenco guitar was always there... For this reason I decided to move to Spain. This time in Barcelona where I met Sergio Dorado, who turned out to be an excellent teacher. With his help, I entered the Liceu music conservatory in Barcelona to study with maestro Manuel Granados for two years and I got my professional intermediate-level flamenco guitar qualification.
Meeting Paco Serrano
A few years earlier in 2007 my dear friend and coworker Donald van der Werff personally met Paco Serrano at the Guitar Festival in Cordoba, and I was astounded not just by his playing, but also by his teaching skills. Therefore, after finishing the music conservatory in 2010, I decided to move to Cordoba to study with the maestro. Those classes were a true revelation to me because never before had I met any teacher that was able to so clearly explain this beautiful, but also difficult art.
The idea of Online Flamenco
One day a good friend suggested that with my experience I should help others since I had been on my flamenco journey for so long and this is when I came up with the idea of creating Online Flamenco. When I talked about it to Maestro Paco he told me he had the exact same idea! Immediately we decided to join forces and build a website so that anyone could have learn from the maestro and this is how Online Flamenco started.
